Responsibilities - Police, Trading Standards, Environmental Health and West Midlands Fire Service
Enforcement of fireworks falls to a number of different agencies.
The Police deal with:
- Fireworks being set off during restricted night hours.
- Fireworks used in the street or other public places.
- Under-18s found in possession of fireworks.
Trading Standards deal with:
- Making sure fireworks sold in shops are safe and meet UK safety standards.
- Under Age Sales of fireworks to ensure that retailers are not selling fireworks to under 18’s.
Environmental Health deal with:
- Complaints about noise nuisance from fireworks.
- Working with local partners to help keep residents informed and protected.
- Investigating health and safety related complaints about commercial bonfires or firework displays in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
West Midlands Fire Service deal with:
- The licensing and registration to store fireworks at retail businesses.
- The illegal sale of fireworks – selling fireworks without the correct licence or registration.
- The sale of fireworks outside permitted times.
