Responsibilities - Police, Trading Standards, Environmental Health and West Midlands Fire Service

Enforcement of fireworks falls to a number of different agencies.  

The Police deal with:

  • Fireworks being set off during restricted night hours.
  • Fireworks used in the street or other public places.
  • Under-18s found in possession of fireworks.

Trading Standards deal with:

  • Making sure fireworks sold in shops are safe and meet UK safety standards.
  • Under Age Sales of fireworks to ensure that retailers are not selling fireworks to under 18’s.

Environmental Health deal with:

  • Complaints about noise nuisance from fireworks.
  • Working with local partners to help keep residents informed and protected.
  • Investigating health and safety related complaints about commercial bonfires or firework displays in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

West Midlands Fire Service deal with:

  • The licensing and registration to store fireworks at retail businesses.
  • The illegal sale of fireworks – selling fireworks without the correct licence or registration.
  • The sale of fireworks outside permitted times.
