Firework Sales and Storage
In Sandwell, firework sales and storage are dealt with by the following bodies:
- Sale of Fireworks – retailers must have a registration (temporary storage at permitted selling times) or licence (for all year-round sale) if they want to store fireworks. This is enforced by West Midlands Fire Service to ensure that they are stored safely. Without an all-year supply licence, fireworks can only be supplied during the following time periods:
- from the 15th of October to 10th November
- from the 26th to 31st December
- on the first day of the Chinese New Year and the three days immediately preceding it
- on the first day of Diwali and the three days immediately preceding it
- Under Age Sales of Fireworks – retailers must not sell fireworks to children under 18. Sandwell Trading Standards team carry out regular test purchasing exercises to ensure shops are following the law.
- Safety of Fireworks - Retailers must only sell fireworks that are safe and compliant. Sandwell Trading Standards team enforces safety legislation which requires fireworks to have specific labelling. Only fireworks that comply with safety standards, carry the CE and/or UKCA mark and are correctly labelled in English with details of the manufacturer and importer can legally be supplied to consumers.
