Sandwell Council Fireworks Motion

Following on from the implementation of the Animal Welfare Charter, Sandwell Council agreed a motion in December 2024, to reduce the impact of fireworks on people, pets and wildlife.

The Council recognises that fireworks are part of cultural celebrations such as Bonfire Night, New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, however fireworks can cause distress to animals as well as to residents and we are therefore encouraging people to celebrate in a safer and quieter way.

As part of this motion, firework displays are no longer permitted on Council-owned public land or in other public spaces across Sandwell. Alongside this, the Council is:

  • Working with venues to discourage traditional firework displays.
  • Encouraging the use of quieter or low-noise fireworks where displays do take place.
  • Encouraging local retailers to stock quieter fireworks.
  • Raising awareness about the impacts of fireworks through local campaigns.
  • Backing calls for national legislation to introduce stricter limits on firework noise.

This approach is designed to protect animal welfare and support community wellbeing, while making sure celebrations can still be enjoyed in a safer and more considerate way.
