Dementia is a common condition and many people go undiagnosed. In Sandwell there are about 3,300 people living with dementia. That number is expected to double over the next 30 years. Usually dementia occurs in people who are 56 or over, however younger people can develop the condition.

If you are worried about your memory, or are concerned about a relative or friend, speak to your doctor first. You should also talk with friends or relatives.

The council, the NHS, voluntary organisations and charities provide local services for people with dementia and their carers. We are all working together to make sure that people with dementia get the support they need early on, and can make plans for their care in the future.

In Sandwell we aim to help people live well with dementia. We support people who need help to stay in their own homes and we encourage people to use services which enable them to live independently rather than go into hospital or a care home.

What services are there?

Learn more about dementia

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has an online Dementia Gateway which has lots of useful information and training sessions that will help you to learn more about dementia. The training is aimed at home care workers and other professionals, however it will be equally valuable for anyone who is living with dementia or caring for someone who is. Information has been written by national dementia experts.

The Alzheimer's Society website contains a wide range of information about dementia. It has discussion forums where you can ask for advice, join in discussions and feel supported.
