Equality Act

Our new Equality Objective has been developed in line with the guidance provided by the Equality Act 2010, this Act creates a legal requirement for the council to outline how we will work towards:

  • Eliminating unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act
  • Advancing the equality of opportunity between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
  • Fostering good relations between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not (this includes tackling prejudice and promoting understanding)

The protected characteristics identified in the Equality Act 2010 are:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation
  • marriage and/or civil partnership
