Sandwell Council is committed to the safe, responsible, and sustainable management of trees on council housing properties. This policy sets out how we will maintain trees to protect residents, homes, and the local environment.

Our approach is fair, transparent, and resident-focused, defining the responsibilities of both the Council and tenants in managing trees safely. We aim to reduce risks, enhance our neighbourhoods, and support biodiversity across our housing estates.

The Council will respond to reports of dangerous, dead, dying, or diseased trees, while encouraging tenants to care for healthy trees responsibly. We will make reasonable adjustments to assist residents who may need additional support.

We are committed to treating all residents with fairness, respect, and dignity, and will continue to listen to feedback to improve how we manage tree-related issues.

This policy sets out the standards for our tree management service, including how we will:

  • Prioritise urgent safety concerns such as fallen or diseased trees;
  • Clearly define the roles and responsibilities of the Council and tenants;
  • Deliver consistent, expert-led inspections and maintenance;
  • Promote responsible planting and tree care to prevent nuisance or damage;
  • Provide accessible, supportive services for residents who need help;
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
