How do I address the Mayor?

  • In writing: The Worshipful the Mayor of Sandwell, Councillor Margaret Sutton
  • In conversation: “Madam Mayor” or “Mr Mayor if male Mayor

What is precedence?

The Mayor takes precedence over all Councillors within the borough at civic events, reflecting their role as First Citizen having regard to His Majesty’s royal prerogative. If present, the only persons the Mayor yields precedence to are members of the Royal Family and the Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands.  

If the Mayor is expected to speak at an event, they are the first person to speak after the initial introduction by the host.

For formal occasions, which may include sit-down meals, please contact civic staff who will advise on seating arrangements. Please be advised, the Mayor is first to be served.

What is the Mayoral Attendant?

The Mayoral Attendant supports the Mayor or Deputy Mayor at official engagements. Their duties may include:

  • Attending events alongside the Mayor/Deputy Mayor
  • Carrying the Mace at formal occasions
  • Assisting with ceremonial arrangements

Can the Mayor attend my event?

Yes, subject to availability. Priority is given to events within Sandwell, especially those supporting the community or the Mayor’s charities.

What should I expect when the Mayor attends?

Depending on your event, the Mayor may:

  • Give a speech
  • Present awards or certificates
  • Meet attendees and guests
