The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) have agent standards set out with regards to how agents are expected to interact with the VOA and its services, and how the VOA will deal with the minority of agents who do not meet the standards.
Do You Need to Use an Agent?
Ratepayers are not required to use an agent to manage business rates.
Ratepayers can use the VOA’s online service to challenge their RV for free. If ratepayers do choose to hire an agent, the VOA has a checklist which may be useful when deciding how to select a reputable professional.
Using An Agent
Customers should always check a firm or individual’s background and professional status before signing a contract.
Customers should be wary when interacting with business rates agents of the following,
- Attempts to pressure ratepayers to make a decision or sign a contract.
- Claims that the agent are acting on behalf of the VOA or forwards communication claiming it is from the VOA.
- Makes demands for large sums of money directly.
- Makes false claims about discounts or unclaimed credits which ratepayers may be entitled to.
