Elective Home Education Welcome Pack for Parents

The following publishers all produce books that match National Curriculum study for age groups bands or Year Group levels so you can be sure that the content is at the appropriate level for the age of your child. Some children may be behind for their age so a good guide is to start with a lower age and progress as they get more confident. Some will be tailored more to the younger child as the content is colourful and engaging so you may want to try out a variety rather than sticking to one or switch to CGP as they get older as these books are more text based.

These books can be found at various places such as WHSmith’s, Waterstones, Online on Amazon or eBay but try looking in supermarkets and pound stores as they also stock a lot of educational books at relatively low prices and if you get on the Facebook Home Education groups people sell them second hand too so you can save lots of money and get some real bargains as people will even swap them if you have something you are prepared to swap!

This is a workbook resource for helping with grammar, reading, fluency and comprehension as well as spelling.

 

A highly structured, multi-sensory Reading manual for teachers and parents. Toe By Toe is a small red book designed for anyone who finds reading difficult. This includes weak readers who struggle to decode or those with dyslexic difficulties. Keda Cowling chose the name Toe By Toe to signify that students make progress by the tiniest steps – one toe at a time. However, even though the steps taken are small, students can clearly measure progress right from the first page. Confidence and self-esteem are boosted as a result. Recommendation appears to be that the minimum age for a child to start Toe By Toe would be: 7+ years of age. In the UK then the optimum age to begin Toe By Toe (if it is delivered in school time) would be the start of year 3 (or 2nd Grade for the USA). However, for children without any significant reading difficulties Toe By Toe can be used effectively at a younger age, even from the age of 5. If for example you want to support or accelerate progress or give children the best start in learning the English language, Toe By Toe is an ideal tool.

Levels 4 and above are designed to be self-directed by the child, but parents can be as involved as they would like.

A lot of you like going to see productions and immersing your children in theatre and interactive learning so this may be a good link to have. This site once you sign up and if they invite you to join you will get invites for free tickets to see performances sometimes when they are launching a new show/preview performance or when they have unsold tickets the only catch is its last minute so it may be the day before a show. But hey its free so why not!

This is a charity organisation which offers free sleepovers and activities for families with an autistic child.

 

 

 

There is a great opportunity for Home Educated young people aged 14-16 years to become an NHS Cadet, with St Johns Ambulance. Becoming an NHS Cadet will help you understand the different careers in the healthcare system and show you the routes to get there, plus it’s great for your CV. You will gain  transferable skills and knowledge that will also develop you as a person and improve your confidence. Being a cadet will also give you first hand access to work experience, so you can gain insight into specific roles including, Nurse, Paramedic, Doctor and many others. This is an  exciting 12 month programme of 2 hours a week over a 36-week programme. Delivers lots of projects that young people can volunteer at or can get support from one being Family Matters which works with people one-to-one to understand their goals and their challenges, and then offer all the support that’s needed to help them achieve their goals. If you are aged 16 or over, and are out of work, then Family Matters could help you. Family Matters also works with young people aged 15 or over who are not in education, employment or training. Family Matters can help you with any of the following:

Family support, Confidence building, One-to-one mentoring and support, Information, advice and guidance, Help with CVs and application forms, Job search support, Training, Volunteering opportunities.
