Why is the library closing?
The library is closing temporarily to allow essential asbestos removal work to take place safely.
I've been using the library for years. Should I be worried?
No. There is no risk to current or previous library users, staff, visitors or members of the public.
Is there a risk to neighbouring businesses?
No. The work will be completed under strict health and safety rules by specialist contractors.
How long will the library be closed?
The library is expected to close from Monday 5 October until Monday 26 October 2026.
Why does the library need to close completely?
The specialist asbestos removal work can only be carried out safely when the building is closed to staff and visitors. This allows contractors to work in line with strict health and safety requirements.
Will alternative library services be available?
Yes. Nearby libraries will provide additional capacity during the closure period.
Can I still return my library books during the closure?
Yes. A book returns drop-box will be available at the library entrance throughout the closure. You can also use any library in Sandwell including nearby libraries - you don't need to re-register.
What happens to groups that meet at the library?
Alternative arrangements will be offered where possible and we’ve relocated some library activities to Wednesbury Museum and Art Gallery and Wednesbury Town Hall.
Could the reopening date change?
We expect to reopen the library on Monday 26 October. If the work is completed sooner, the library may reopen earlier.
