Martyn's Law
The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, commonly known as Martyn’s Law, received Royal Assent in April 2025. The Act aims to improve organisational preparedness and protective security across the UK, requiring that those responsible for certain premises and events take steps to prepare for potential terrorist attacks and help keep people safe in the event of an attack. In addition, certain larger premises and events are required to consider their vulnerability to acts of terrorism, and, where appropriate, take steps to reduce those vulnerabilities.
The Home Office has published statutory guidance (Martyn's Law:Statutory Guidance) intended to assist those responsible for premises and events in scope to understand the requirements set out in the legislation.
The legislation builds upon the Protect and Prepare strands of the Government's wider counter terrorism strategy, CONTEST, the aim of which is to reduce the risk from terrorism to the UK. Through Martyn’s Law, premises will be better prepared and ready to respond in the event of a terrorist attack. Simple steps save lives.
National Protective Security Authority
The National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) (https://www.npsa.gov.uk/) are the National Technical Authority for physical and personnel security and as part of the Security Service, MI5, make the UK more resilient to terrorism and state threats.
They help organisations understand the range of threats they and the UK face, for example from terrorism, espionage, and state actors, and importantly what they can do to minimise their risk through how they operate day to day. They offer guidance, training, and advice to help organisations recognise, identify and mitigate security risks by implementing proportionate and practical protective security measures.
