Register a death

Update on funeral services during the Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic

If a death has occurred in Sandwell it must be registered by Sandwell Register Office within five days from when it occurred. However, if the Coroner is involved this period may be extended.

Changes have been made to the law and what you need to do if someone dies and you are the informant. All death registrations will now be completed by telephone and informants will not be required to attend the Register Office in person. If your GP/Hospital Doctor can offer a cause of death they will complete the Medical Certificate Cause of Death (MCCD) in the usual way but will send this directly to the Register Office.  You will no longer need to collect this from the GP or the hospital.

We can only register a death once we are in receipt of the Medical Certificate Cause of Death.

Please call us on 0121 368 1188 or email us at Registrars_Westbromwich@sandwell.gov.uk to let us know that you wish to register a death and as soon as we receive the Medical Certificate we will be in touch with you to arrange to complete the registration.

If the death is referred to the Coroner, then the Coroner’s Office will be in touch with you to confirm what will happen next.

What documents will you need?

If available for the appointment, please have the national insurance number of the deceased

How much are certificates?

Certificates are £11 each and you will be able to do this over the telephone with a Credit or Debit Card

Urgent registration of a death

An out-of-hours service is available for families who need to register a death so that an urgent burial can take place either at a weekend or a Bank Holiday.

This service is for when a burial needs to take place on the day of death or the next day.
