The council offers a chargeable treatment for cockroach infestations in occupied (not empty) homes in Sandwell. If you would prefer, you can approach an independent pest control company.
There are two types of cockroach commonly found in this country and they are quite large insects. The oriental cockroach is larger, dark brown and 20-24mm long and the German
cockroach is sometimes known as the steam bug. It is yellowish brown in colour, has two dark marks on the middle of its body and is 10-15mm long. Both have whip-like feelers.
They can be found in all types of buildings and they particularly like kitchens. Cockroaches come out at night, spending the day hiding in cracks and gaps around sinks, drains, cookers,
skirting boards, service ducts and fridge motor compartments.
What you should do
- Treatment of cockroaches is difficult and professional help is needed to deal with them.
- Please keep samples for identification where possible.
- When carrying out any pest treatment yourself always read the container’s label before you buy to make sure it is suitable and follow the instructions carefully.
- Please note we only treat cockroaches inside the property.
- Cockroach treatments can take months to fully resolve and therefore the insecticidal gels used by our pest control officers when undertaking the treatment, must be left in place
