Sandwell Stands Against Modern Slavery campaign

Residents are being encouraged to learn more about modern slavery, how to spot the signs of exploitation and where to report concerns as part of Sandwell Council's Sandwell Stands Against Modern Slavery campaign throughout October.

To mark Anti-Slavery Week and Anti-Slavery Day on 18 October, officers from Sandwell Council and partner organisations will be hosting a community awareness stand outside Oldbury Council House from 10am to 2pm on Monday 12 October, where residents can find out more about the different forms of modern slavery and the support available for victims. The awareness day forms part of a wider campaign running throughout October under the theme "Hidden in Plain Sight", aimed at helping people recognise the signs of exploitation and take action.

Modern slavery can take many forms, including labour exploitation, criminal exploitation, sexual exploitation, human trafficking, domestic servitude and cuckooing, where vulnerable people's homes are taken over by criminals. It often remains hidden within communities, workplaces and homes, making public awareness vital to helping identify and protect victims.

Throughout the month, residents will see awareness messages across social media, digital advertising and partner communications highlighting how to recognise the warning signs and how concerns can be reported safely. The campaign encourages people to remember that modern slavery is often hidden in plain sight and that everyone has a role to play in helping protect vulnerable people.

Councillor Bob Jones, Sandwell Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Enforcement, said:

"Modern slavery is a serious crime that can affect anyone, regardless of age, background or circumstances. Sadly, many victims remain hidden because they are being controlled, threatened or coerced by those exploiting them.

"Anti-Slavery Week is an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the signs of exploitation and understand how to report concerns. Even the smallest piece of information could help protect a vulnerable person and enable agencies to provide support.

"I would encourage residents to visit our awareness stand in Oldbury on 12 October, speak to officers and partners, and learn more about how together we can make Sandwell a hostile place for those who exploit others."

Signs of modern slavery can include someone appearing fearful or withdrawn, individuals being controlled by another person, people living or working in poor conditions, or someone who seems unable to speak freely about their circumstances. Residents are encouraged to trust their instincts and report concerns if something does not seem right.

Anyone who suspects modern slavery can report concerns to the police, local authority or the Modern Slavery & Exploitation Helpline. Concerns can also be raised through trusted local organisations and support services. www.sandwell.gov.uk/modernslavery

The Sandwell Stands Against Modern Slavery campaign runs throughout October and supports national efforts to raise awareness of exploitation, encourage reporting and help protect vulnerable people from harm. Residents can follow Sandwell Council's social media channels and website for more information throughout the month.
