Hundreds of people in need of help and support have benefited from a pilot free advice centre set up by Sandwell Council.
The Smethwick Advice Centre, based at Smethwick Library every Wednesday, offers support with money, benefits, employment and a range of other issues.
More than 200 people have already attended the weekly advice sessions, which launched in July.
Initial figures show a 99% satisfaction rate, with 98% of people who used the service saying they would recommend the service to others. And 99% said they felt confident they could resolve their issue after receiving advice.
The Advice Centre brings together experienced advisers from Sandwell Council and voluntary and community sector organisations to help residents resolve a wide range of financial, housing and welfare issues.
Advice on offer includes help with:
- Benefits and debt
- Immigration and housing
- Education and employment
- Consumer rights
- Energy debt and utility bills
- Rent arrears and mortgage issues
- Charity and grant applications
- Help to get online
- Signposting and referrals to other specialist services.
Councillor Gary Dale, Sandwell Council's Cabinet Member for Finance and Corporate Services, said: "The Smethwick Advice Centre is for anyone living in Sandwell who needs support. Whether you are struggling with rising costs, unsure about claiming benefits, looking for work or simply in need of advice, we're here to help.
"We have several services available under one roof, making it easier for residents to speak to the right person. We want to help people at the earliest opportunity and, where possible, prevent issues from escalating into crisis."
The Smethwick Advice Centre is open to all Sandwell residents. It takes place every Wednesday, from 9.30am to 2pm. No appointment is necessary.
Following the pilot, the council will consider rolling out similar advice centres in other towns across Sandwell where a need for free advice has been identified.
