The Blue Badge team

Sandwell Council has launched a new online application process to give residents a quicker, easier and more convenient way to apply for a Blue Badge.

The new service, which went live on 10 November, allows people to complete their application online at a time that suits them via the MySandwell portal, removing the need for paper forms or in-person appointments.

Since launching, the digital system has transformed how applications are handled and significantly improved waiting times, ensuring people receive the support they need much sooner. In the first month, more than 500 applications have been handled online and decision times have been cut from an average of 12 weeks to just four days.

Angela from Wednesbury used the new system. She said: “The new blue badge system was really easy to use and I completed the online form really quickly for my husband’s new Blue Badge. If I can do it anyone can!”

The move was driven by feedback from residents and Adult Social Care Services, and reflects the council’s ambition to provide a first-class service to customers.

Alongside the online service, the council has ensured free offline support remains available for anyone who needs help completing their application. This includes the Community Offer service funded by the council, which provides free support across the borough - both face-to-face and over the phone - ensuring the service is accessible for everyone.

Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Wellbeing, Councillor Jackie Taylor said: “This new online process makes applying for a Blue Badge faster, simpler and more convenient.

“We listened to feedback from Blue Badge holders and wanted to improve how people apply for and renew their Blue Badge.

“We want all residents to receive services in a timely manner, and this is one way we are addressing waiting lists and realising the Adult Social Care vision to provide the right support, at the right time and in the right place, to maximise independence and empower people to remain safe and healthy.

“We are delighted to see such a significant improvement in decision times, while still offering free support for anyone who prefers help in person. This ensures the service is inclusive and accessible for all of our residents and reflects ongoing improvements in our Adult Social Care services.”
