Sandwell Council has begun a major clean-up programme to improve public spaces across all six towns in Sandwell.
Running until the end of February 2026, the project will see seven dedicated 'green hit squads' working ward-by-ward in each town to deliver deep cleans.
Key activities will include: cutting back overgrowth, litter picking, grass edging, moss removal, strimming, leaf litter clearance and general tidying.
The project has also enabled the council to retain its seasonal workforce throughout the winter, providing continued employment for many local residents.
Over the past six weeks, staff have received additional training to ensure they have the skills needed to deliver the intensive cleansing programme effectively.
Councillor Keith Allcock, Cabinet Member for Environment and Highways at Sandwell Council, said: “We know that the local environment really matters to our residents, and want to make Sandwell a cleaner, greener and safer place to live.
“The ward-by-ward cleanse will make a visible difference across housing sites, highways, parks and other public spaces to ensure that Sandwell is a place that everyone is proud to call home.”
The 'green hit squads' will tackle the spots on public land that have been identified directly by residents or through their local councillors. Any further spots identified during this campaign will be inspected to ensure as many areas are cleaned up as possible within the time and resources allocated.
