Housing team recognised for outstanding commitment to animal welfare in Sandwell

Sandwell Council is proud to announce it has been awarded Gold for Housing in the RSPCA PawPrints Awards 2025, the only scheme of its kind in England and Wales.

This prestigious honour recognises our commitment to developing pet-friendly housing policies and proactive support for pet owners in housing.

The PawPrints Awards celebrate local authorities, public bodies, and partners that go the extra mile to protect and promote animal welfare.

Over the past year, Sandwell Council has strengthened its commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership among tenants. This includes ensuring that permission is sought before a pet is kept in a property, that animals are housed in safe and suitable conditions, and that their welfare remains a priority throughout tenancy management. The Council also collects important information such as pet descriptions, microchipping details (where required), confirmation that pets are legal, and alternative contacts in case of emergencies or the need for rehoming. Having previously held the Silver Award, this more proactive approach was a key factor in securing the Gold Award.

Also recognised by the RSPCA was Councillor Jeffcoat, and Independent Councillor for Tipton Green, who was awarded the Massingham Advocacy Award for his commitment to improving animal welfare in Sandwell. As a member of Sandwell Council’s Animal Welfare Taskforce, his efforts have helped raise awareness, build partnerships, and place animal welfare firmly on the local agenda.

Cllr Kerrie Carmichael was one of the first recipients of the Massingham Advocacy Award when it was introduced in 2024, so with Cllr Richard Jeffcoat receiving it in 2025, two of the first six recipients are councillors in Sandwell.

Kerrie Carmichael, Leader of Sandwell Council said: “We are delighted to receive this Gold award, which recognises the dedication of our housing staff, partners and our residents.  Animal welfare is at the heart of what we do, and we are proud to be setting high standards in Housing.”

“I’m delighted that Councillor Jeffcoat will receive the Massingham Advocacy award which reflects his work to promote animal welfare in Sandwell, as part of our Animal Welfare Taskforce. The taskforce is a powerful example of how local advocacy can create kinder, more compassionate communities.”

Lee Gingell, Public Affairs Manager at the RSPCA, said: “We’re delighted to recognise Sandwell Council with the Gold category in Housing in this year’s RSPCA PawPrints Awards. Their commitment to animal welfare is truly commendable, and we hope their example inspires others to strive for excellence.”
