The new West Bromwich indoor market will open for business from 9am on Wednesday 27 August.
The new indoor market is located on the High Street and replaces the existing indoor market situated in Kings Square.
This is one of the centrepieces of Sandwell Council’s West Bromwich Masterplan, created to deliver a modern and vibrant destination for both traders and shoppers. Combining traditional market stalls with contemporary facilities, the market will also feature specialist street food in the new food court.
The project is a great example of collaboration thanks to £2.61million funding from the Government’s Towns Fund programme, which is supporting regeneration and investment in towns across the country, and £2.03million funding from Sandwell Council. It is also another project which has been delivered on budget.
As part of the recently launched Sandwell Story – a project created to celebrate the borough, champion its people, and highlight Sandwell as a great place to live, learn, work and visit – the market provides a powerful connection between past and present, honouring local heritage while shaping a bold new future for the town.
Firkins bakery returns to West Bromwich
After a decade away from the high street, Firkins Bakery will return to where it all began – West Bromwich.
Founded in 1870 by Mary Firkin in Carters Green, West Bromwich, the bakery first made its name with award-winning pork pies before growing into one of the largest regional family bakeries in the country.
Though the Firkins family stepped away from the business in 2006, the name and reputation have lived on. Now, spurred on by loyal customers who never stopped asking when the much-loved cakes, breads and pastries would make a comeback, Firkins is returning home to a new base inside the new Indoor Market. The reopening in West Bromwich marks a new chapter for the bakery, reconnecting with its roots while continuing to offer the quality and tradition that generations of families have cherished.
Rob Green, Managing Director of Firkins said:
"We’ve been overwhelmed by the continued affection for Firkins over the years. It feels only right to return to West Bromwich, where the story began and bring back the flavours and memories that so many people still talk about with fondness."
The market will also include butcher, fishmonger, Caribbean food supplies, beauty services, cosmetics and perfume, curtains, mobile phone repairs, as well as clothes, haberdashery and pet food supplies.
A new food court will offer diverse cuisines including East Asian, Sri Lankan, Caribbean, hot pork sandwiches, instore bakery and freshly made doughnuts.
Councillor Peter Hughes, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Infrastructure said:
“We're really pleased to be able to announce an opening date for the new West Bromwich indoor market. The new indoor market is creating spaces for people to shop, meet and socialise, but also providing new cultural opportunities with events and live music.
“I’m personally proud that this is yet another Sandwell project which has been delivered on budget. It shows that for big schemes, Sandwell can think big for our communities and deliver.”
Chris Hinson, Chair of West Bromwich Town Deal Board commented:
“The opening of the new Indoor Market marks a major milestone in West Bromwich’s journey of regeneration. Markets have always been at the heart of our town, and this modern, vibrant space will not only support local traders but also attract more visitors into the town centre. It reflects our commitment to creating a thriving, inclusive, and sustainable future for West Bromwich, and I’m proud to see this vision becoming reality.
"This is just one of the many parts which will help deliver our award-winning West Bromwich masterplan."
