Sandwell Council is to start remediation work at the High Bullen Car Park as part of its ongoing commitment to deliver the Wednesbury Town Centre Masterplan.

This work, scheduled to begin on Monday 16 June 2025, involves stabilising shallow mine workings beneath the site. This is not the beginning of development or construction, but rather a vital preparatory step to ensure the land is safe and ready for future regeneration.

The work will be carried out in two phases:
•    Phase One: 16 June – 25 July 2025
•    Phase Two: 21 July – 12 September 2025

To carry out these activities safely, designated sections of the car park will be temporarily closed during each phase. Clear signage and fencing will be in place and each area will be reopened for public use as soon as it is safe to do so.

Some disruption is expected due to drilling and machinery noise during working hours (Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm). The council and its contractors will do everything possible to keep disruption to a minimum.

A plan of affected areas of the car park during the two phases will be located near the pay and display machines and car park entrances. Other car parks in the town centre will not be affected by the remediation works and will remain open and available as usual.

This work is part of the Wednesbury Levelling Up Partnership and is funded by Government. It is a key early step in preparing the site for future development and bringing forward the vision set out in the Town Centre Masterplan helping to lay the foundation for future opportunities, growth, and investment.

Ground stabilisation work is also currently underway at the former Spires Health Centre site on Victoria Street, with further remediation work planned to begin later this year at the former Outdoor Market site on Union Street. Although long-term development proposals for these sites are not yet confirmed, these initial remediation works are vital to improving site viability and paving the way for future development. No construction or development will begin until further planning and consultation processes are complete.

Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Infrastructure, Councillor Peter Hughes, said:

“I would like to thank residents and businesses for their patience during these works, but I can assure them that this is just the start of some exciting work to regenerate and reinvigorate Wednesbury Town Centre for everyone and for years to come.”
