The Household Energy Payment will provide a £100 payment to eligible households in Council Tax bands A to D to help with energy costs.
Payments will begin from January 2027.
Who is eligible?
You may be eligible if:
- your home is in Council Tax band A, B, C or D
- the property is your main home
- you are responsible for paying the Council Tax bill.
This includes most households that are exempt from Council Tax (such as student-only households) or those that receive a Council Tax discount.
The government will publish full eligibility criteria soon.
You may not be eligible if the property is:
- a second home
- empty
- occupied by someone who is not responsible for paying the Council Tax bill.
How do I find out my Council Tax band?
You can check your Council Tax band on the GOV.UK website.
Do I need to do anything?
If you pay your Council Tax by Direct Debit you do not need to do anything.
We will pay the £100 directly into your bank account from January 2027 using the bank details we already hold for your Council Tax account. Please do not contact the council about the payment at this stage.
If you do not pay your Council Tax by Direct Debit we will contact you and explain how to apply for the payment.
Be scam aware
The council will only contact residents who need to apply for the payment.
Be cautious of unexpected calls, emails, texts or social media messages asking you to claim the payment or provide personal information.
Only share your details if you are certain the contact is genuinely from the council.
