Council Tax
Council Tax helps pay for things we all use, like schools, bin collections, and the police.
Adults who live in a home or flat usually need to pay it. Some people, like students or people who are very unwell, might not have to pay.
How much you pay depends on how much your home is worth. Homes are put into groups called bands, from A to H.
You can pay your Council Tax by direct debit, online, or in person. You can also pay using MySandwell, which is an online way to use different council services.
Making a MySandwell account is easy. We just need your name, address, and contact details.
If you move house in Sandwell, move out of Sandwell, or move abroad, please tell Sandwell Council.
Every home needs to pay Council Tax. Some people can get a smaller bill for different reasons, or be exempt for paying altogether.
You must pay on time and in full. If you pay late or not enough, the council may take action to get the money.
Council Tax is a yearly charge. Most people pay it in ten monthly payments, from April to January.
You can also choose to pay in twelve smaller payments, from April to March.
If you want to do this, please contact us or write to:
Sandwell MBC (Council Tax), PO Box 10597, Nottingham, NG6 6DQ.
Your bill shows the exact dates and amounts you need to pay. Make sure you pay the right amount on time (usually the 1st of each month unless you pay by Direct Debit). If you owe money from before, your payment might go to that first.
If anything changes on your Council Tax account, we will send you a new bill. Please follow the dates and amounts on your newest bill.
You could be eligible for Council Tax Reduction if you’re on a low income or claim benefits. Your bill could be reduced by up to 100% if you have a child under the age of 6 and live in a band A or B property or if you are over 65.
Sandwell Council has an income-banded Council Tax Reduction Scheme for working age people, this scheme considers:
