THE BOROUGH COUNCIL OF SANDWELL (CRANFORD STREET, SMETHWICK) COMPULSORY PURCHASE ORDER 2025

The site south of Cranford Street lies within the Grove Lane Masterplan approved by the council in February 2022.  The Grove Lane Masterplan identifies this area for transformational change with residential development surrounding the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

As part of the Government’s Towns Fund programme, this site has been identified for a residential scheme of up to 100 new homes and a commercial unit, with new infrastructure, public realm and access.

Cabinet approved the making of a Compulsory Purchase Order at its meeting in November 2022 to purchase compulsorily the land described as comprising 1.79 hectares of land on the south side of Cranford Street, Smethwick and is bounded by Cranford Street to the north and the Cape Arm canal to the west and south,  for the purpose of facilitating the carrying out of development, redevelopment or improvement of land.

The Compulsory Purchase Order has now been submitted to the Planning Casework Unit and the date of a Public Inquiry has been set for Tuesday 6 October 2026 for three days.  The Statement of Case can be viewed here;
