Once you turn 16 and finish Year 11, you:

  • Can work more hours

  • Can work in more types of jobs

  • Are still required to be in education or training until 18

This means you can work alongside:

  • Sixth Form

  • College

  • An apprenticeship

  • A training course


How many hours can a 16-year-old work?

During term time

  • Up to 12 hours per week

  • Usually evenings and weekends

During school holidays

  • Up to 35–40 hours per week (depending on employer)

Time limits

  • No work before 6am or after 10pm

  • Must have rest breaks

  • Must have at least 2 days off per week


How much will you be paid?

The National Minimum Wage for under-18s applies.

  • Pay varies by employer and job

  • Some employers pay more than minimum wage

  • You should always:

    • Get a payslip

    • Be paid through payroll

    • Be paid at least the legal minimum


 Do you need permission or paperwork?

You may need:

  • Proof of age (passport or birth certificate)

  • National Insurance number (sent just before you turn 16)

  • Parental consent (some employers)

  • A simple contract or agreement

Some local councils require a young person’s work permit — schools or employers usually help with this.


What jobs CAN’T 16-year-olds do?

You cannot do work that is:

  • Dangerous or unsafe

  • Involves heavy machinery

  • Involves alcohol sales without supervision

  • In a nightclub or gambling venue

  • Full-time during school hours

Your employer must follow health and safety rules for young workers.
