Acing Your University Interview
Being invited to a university interview is a great achievement. It means the university is interested in you and wants to learn more about your suitability for the course. The interview is your opportunity to demonstrate your enthusiasm, knowledge and potential.
Before the Interview
- Research the university and your chosen course thoroughly.
- Review your personal statement and application, as you may be asked about what you have written.
- Keep up to date with current developments relevant to your subject area.
- Practise answering common interview questions with a teacher, careers adviser, friend or family member.
- Plan your journey in advance if attending in person, or test your technology if the interview is online.
Questions You May Be Asked
- Why do you want to study this course?
- Why have you chosen this university?
- What interests you most about the subject?
- What have you done outside school or college to explore the subject further?
- What are your future career goals?
- Can you tell us about a challenge you have overcome?
Top Interview Tips
- Be yourself – interviewers want to get to know the real you.
- Listen carefully to each question before answering.
- Take your time – it is okay to pause and think.
- Give examples from your studies, work experience, volunteering or extracurricular activities.
- Show enthusiasm for your subject and future ambitions.
- Ask questions about the course, facilities or student experience if given the opportunity.
For Online Interviews
- Choose a quiet space with a good internet connection.
- Dress appropriately.
- Keep your camera on and maintain eye contact.
- Remove distractions and silence notifications.
- Have a copy of your application and notes nearby.
Remember
You do not need to know all the answers. Universities are looking for students who are curious, motivated and willing to learn. Confidence comes from preparation, so take time to practise and believe in your abilities.
