What is a Careers Interview

What is a Careers Interview?

A careers interview is a one-to-one meeting where you talk to a careers adviser about your future.

It’s a chance to:

  • Talk about your interests and strengths

  • Explore career ideas

  • Learn about post-16 or post-18 options

  • Get advice on next steps

It is supportive, not a test or exam.

Who is it with?

You usually meet with:

  • A qualified careers adviser

  • Sometimes a school careers lead or external adviser

Their job is to:

  • Listen to you

  • Give impartial advice

  • Help you make informed choices

They won’t tell you what to do — they help you decide.

What happens in a careers interview?

You might talk about:

  • Subjects you enjoy (and don’t enjoy)

  • Skills you’re good at

  • Your goals and worries

  • Careers you’re curious about

  • Options like Sixth Form, College, Apprenticeships, T Levels, Training Providers, or University

The adviser may show you:

  • Career pathways

  • Course or job ideas

  • Local opportunities

How long does it last?

  • Usually 30–45 minutes

  • Sometimes shorter for younger students

  • Can be in school, college, or online

Why is a careers interview important?

A careers interview helps you:

  • Feel more confident about your future

  • Understand your options

  • Make better decisions

  • Create a clear plan

  • Reduce stress and confusion
