Medical assessment FAQs

How do I apply? Log onto MySandwell and complete the Priority application form

What is a medical assessment for? If you have a medical reason or disability that is being worsened by your current housing situation, we can assess your circumstances and may be able to award a priority banding to support a move

What supporting information is required? To enable us to assess your situation appropriately you will be required to provide evidence from a medical professional

Will you refer to an Occupational Therapist? Yes, if in the assessment you have disclosed a physical condition or disability we may need to seek advice from an Occupational Therapist. If a recommendation is made, you will be advised of this along with the type of properties you are eligible for

What priority will I be awarded?
If you have an extremely urgent and immediate need to move for medical reasons, or due to a disability which is being made worse by your current housing situation, you will be awarded band 1 priority

If your housing is unsuitable for severe medical reasons, or due to a disability, but you are not housebound, and your health or safety is not at such a risk level to require immediate urgent re-housing, you will be awarded band 2 priority.

How long does it take for a priority decision? Following receipt of the complete assessment form and supporting evidence an Officer will review the information and respond with a decision as soon as possible.

Why has my priority request been refused? You may have failed to provide sufficient information or supporting evidence, or you did not meet the priority criteria despite the information and supporting evidence you provided

Do I have the right to review? Yes, if you disagree with the decision you can ask for a review of your case within 21 days from the date of notification. If no request is received within 21 days the decision shall be deemed to be accepted

When will I be offered a property with medical priority? If you are awarded priority you should experience a reduction in the length of time you await an offer of suitable accommodation.

However, you may still experience lengthy waiting times commonly when you are awaiting specific adaptations. Due to the high demand for housing you will need to continue to bid for properties until you are successful.
