Join the Housing Register
We're reviewing our housing allocations policy - Have your say on the proposed changes.
How council homes are advertised
We advertise homes to rent every week. This is called choice-based lettings (CBL).
Step 1: Join the housing register
To apply for a council home, you must join our housing register first.
Before you apply, check that you meet the rules.
You must:
- be aged 18 or over
- be legally living in the UK
- meet our eligibility criteria
After we process your application, we will send you your membership number by email or letter.
If your application is not successful, we will explain why.
You can also read the full housing allocations policy.
Step 2: Bid for a property
Once you are on the housing register, you can apply for homes by placing a bid.
You can:
- bid for up to three properties each week
- choose homes that are suitable for you
Find and bid for properties
You can also view available homes in our property newsletter.
If you are interested in a flat at Alfred Gunn House, read the important information before you apply.
When to bid
New properties are advertised each week:
- they go live every Wednesday
- you can bid until midnight on Monday
There is no need to rush.
Homes are not given on a first come, first served basis.
You can log in at any time during the week to place your bids.
Please note:
- you cannot bid on a Tuesday
- the website may be busy on Wednesdays
Waiting times and other options
There are more people looking for council homes than there are homes available.
This means you may have to wait a long time.
We recommend that you also consider other housing options, such as:
- housing associations
- private renting
Housing options for people aged 18 to 25
If you are aged 18 to 25 and:
- working
- in an apprenticeship
- or waiting to start a job or apprenticeship
you may be able to access other affordable housing.
Read about these options on the St Basils website.
Update your application
If your circumstances change after you apply, you must tell us.
