Regeneration Plan front cover with an 'approved' stamp.

We are delighted to confirm that Smethwick’s Regeneration Plan has been approved by the Government, marking a significant milestone in the town’s journey towards long-term investment and improvement.

Following the submission of our updated Plan in March 2026 and the subsequent assessment process, the Government has completed its review and confirmed its endorsement. This reflects the strength of the vision for Smethwick and the extensive community engagement that has helped shape it.

This means Smethwick can now move into the delivery phase of the programme.

As outlined in the Plan, investment will be guided by five key priority areas identified through engagement with residents, businesses and community groups:

  • Regeneration, high streets and heritage
  • Community cohesion
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Safety and security
  • Education and opportunity

These priorities will help guide how funding is used. However, they do not limit the scope of the programme, and project ideas that align with any of the programme’s investment themes will still be considered.

The Government’s decision recognises the strong alignment between local priorities and the programme’s objectives, as well as the evidence and feedback that underpin the Plan. The additional detail provided earlier this year - setting out the types of activities that could be delivered in the first four years - has also helped show how community feedback will be turned into action.

As the programme moves forward, more information will be shared on how projects and initiatives can come forward, with a focus on ensuring a fair and transparent approach that reflects local needs and opportunities.

Alan Taylor, Chair of the Smethwick Partnership Board, said: “Government approval of our Regeneration Plan is a hugely positive step for Smethwick. It reflects the strength of local engagement and the shared ambition to deliver lasting improvements across the town. We now look forward to working with our communities and partners to turn this vision into reality.

“We will continue to keep residents and stakeholders updated as the programme progresses, including opportunities to get involved as delivery begins.”

This marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Smethwick, as we work together to deliver lasting, positive change for the community.
