Smethwick has been named one of 75 towns across the UK set to receive up to £20 million in Government investment over a 10-year period as part of the newly launched Plan for Neighbourhoods programme.

The funding, delivered in an endowment-style model, aims to empower local communities to take the lead in setting and delivering priorities that matter most to them.

Initially selected in October 2023 under the former Long-Term Plan for Towns initiative, Smethwick was among 55 towns promised Government funding to support regeneration and local development. To access the funding, towns were required to develop a comprehensive long-term plan informed by local priorities.

Between April and June 2024, the Smethwick Partnership Board, formed to oversee the town's investment initiatives, launched a public engagement campaign inviting residents, businesses and community groups to share their views. Feedback gathered through a dedicated survey helped shape Smethwick’s draft Long-Term Investment Plan, completed in July 2024.

However, the submission of all plans was paused following a change in Government. In December 2024, it was confirmed that the funding programme would continue under a revised structure and new name. On 4 March 2025, the Government unveiled the Plan for Neighbourhoods, outlining three core objectives: Thriving Places, Stronger Neighbourhoods and Taking Back Control. These goals aim to deliver lasting improvements in infrastructure, community cohesion and local governance.

The Smethwick Partnership Board, which includes representatives from community, faith, business, voluntary, and public sectors, along with local councillors, the MP and the Police & Crime Commissioner or their representative, will continue to oversee the rollout of the programme.
