Smethwick is a vibrant and proudly multicultural town in the Black Country, just west of Birmingham. The town lies within the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell and is one of its six towns, alongside Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Tipton, Wednesbury and West Bromwich.

Our history

Smethwick played a key role in Britain’s industrial story. Engineering and manufacturing once powered the town’s growth, and traces of that heritage remain today. Historic landmarks such as the Soho Foundry, Galton Bridge, and the impressive Smethwick Engine stand as reminders of the town’s innovation and craftsmanship.

Our community today

Smethwick is one of the most diverse towns in the region, with around 68% of residents coming from ethnic minority backgrounds. This diversity shapes everything - from local businesses and places of worship to food, festivals and community life. It’s a town where cultures meet, traditions thrive, and new stories are written every day.

Smethwick's boundaries and wards

Smethwick is made up of four local wards:

  • St Paul’s
  • Smethwick
  • Soho and Victoria
  • Bearwood (formerly known as Abbey Ward)

In December 2025, Parliament approved changes to local ward boundaries and names. As part of these changes, Abbey Ward was renamed Bearwood. The interactive map below shows the current ward boundaries as they now stand.

You can explore the map to see where Smethwick begins and ends, and how the four wards are arranged across the town.
