Sandwell businesses looking to expand into international markets can now access fully funded export support through Exporting Starts Here, designed to help SMEs build confidence and success overseas.
Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and commissioned by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), the programme is delivered by the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, Black Country Chamber of Commerce and Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce. It aims to give businesses across the region the tools, knowledge and guidance needed to explore new markets and grow sustainably.
Helping businesses unlock global opportunities
Exporting Starts Here supports businesses at every stage of their export journey, whether they are exploring international trade for the first time, building on early successes or looking to expand into new markets. Exporting can help businesses increase productivity, strengthen resilience and open up new revenue streams, and the programme is designed to make this process easier through practical, tailored support.
The programme is open to small and medium‑sized businesses that are registered in, or primarily operate within, Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall or Wolverhampton. It is suitable for both product and service‑based businesses, including those in tech, finance, creative industries, consulting and education.
What the programme offers
Exporting Starts Here offers a comprehensive package of free support. This includes 1:1 guidance from experienced export specialists, helping businesses with market research, planning, compliance, logistics and overcoming common barriers. A series of practical workshops will also equip businesses with essential export skills, covering customs declarations, export documentation, ATA Carnets, international e‑commerce, rules of origin, free trade agreements and staff upskilling for global expansion.
The programme focuses on sectors where the West Midlands has a competitive advantage, including aerospace, electric vehicle manufacturing, health and med‑tech, logistics, professional and financial services and e‑commerce. It complements national export services by offering a locally embedded approach aligned with regional priorities.
What leaders and exporters are saying
Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “Helping local businesses step into international markets is key to building a strong economy and creating good jobs for local people.”
Tom Marren, from Coventry‑based WOMAG, which now exports to the Middle East, Far East and Africa, said: “Exporting can bring major benefits to your business but you can't do everything by yourself. If you ask for help and bring in support it means you can move a lot more quickly when it comes to growing your overseas markets."
Exporting Starts Here gives West Midlands businesses the opportunity to take their products and services to new international markets, supported by expert guidance, practical resources and a strong regional network.
