Free stop smoking support available for Sandwell businesses
Sandwell Business Ambassadors met on Thursday 12 March 2026 to discuss key issues affecting local businesses, with a strong focus on workforce health and the support available to employers across the borough.
The meeting brought together Ambassadors, Sandwell council representatives and guest speakers, with a key presentation delivered by Ian Hiscock from Stop for Life Sandwell.
Supporting a healthier workforce
Stop for Life Sandwell outlined the significant impact smoking continues to have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
Ambassadors heard how smoking remains one of the largest avoidable causes of ill health, with higher-than-average rates in Sandwell contributing to reduced employment outcomes, increased sickness absence and lower productivity in the workplace.
Smoking is closely linked to financial difficulty, with the average smoker spending between £2,000 and £2,500 per year on tobacco. This has wider implications for workforce wellbeing and participating in the economy.
A fully funded offer for businesses
The presentation highlighted a fully funded support package available to Sandwell businesses, designed to help employees quit smoking and improve overall workplace wellbeing.
Funded by Sandwell Council, the offer includes:

- Advisor drop-in sessions within the workplace
- Pop-up health stalls to engage employees
Businesses can also access tailored support through on-site engagement and training, helping to create a healthier and more productive workforce.
Employees aged 12 and over who live, work or are registered with a GP in Sandwell can access a free 12-week one-to-one stop smoking programme, providing behavioural support and practical tools to help them quit successfully.
