Heating upgrade supports Wednesbury boxing club and local young people

Wodensborough Boxing Club has benefited from a new heating system and electrical safety improvements, helping ensure the club can continue offering sessions for local residents and young people for years to come.

A safe space for the community

Founded in 2010 by head coach Steve O’Rourke, Wodensborough Boxing Club plays a vital role in the local community. The club provides a safe and supportive environment for young people, helping them stay active, build confidence and develop positive routines.

Steve O’Rourke said “We get great excitement not just from the achievements of our boxers, but from being able to support the community. Having a warm, safe space makes a real difference for the young people who come through our doors every day.

The club also delivers sessions funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner through the Violence Reduction Partnership, supporting young people at risk by providing structured activity and mentoring.

Alison O’Connell MBE from Violence Reduction Partnership emphasized the importance of the club saying “the passion and love that comes from the gym towards the young people makes them feel wanted and gives them a sense of belonging”.

Following feedback from the community, it was identified that improved heating was needed to help the club operate comfortably throughout the year, particularly during school holidays when young people spend more of their time at the club.

Partnership delivering social value

Sandwell Council worked with the contractor Dodd Group to deliver the heating upgrade at no cost to the club as part of our commitment to social value. Alongside the new system, electrical checks were carried out to improve safety and long-term sustainability.

The works were carried out by Dodd Group at no additional cost to the project, with the estimated cost of the project being £7,500.

The project also provided hands-on experience for two apprentices involved in the installation, helping develop practical skills and confidence while contributing to a meaningful community improvement.

Supporting positive outcomes

The improvements made through this project will help the club continue delivering these benefits while strengthening its role as a valued community asset in Wednesbury.

The project demonstrates how collaboration between the council, contractors and partners can deliver practical improvements that create lasting value for local communities.
