Supporting Young People with SEND
SEND & Sandwell Careers Service
Our Vision for Young People with SEND
At Sandwell, we want every child and young person with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to have the chance to thrive. Our vision is simple:
Children and young people with SEND should be able to live a healthy, fulfilled life, find meaningful work, build positive relationships, and take part fully in their community.
Careers education plays a vital role in helping young people understand their strengths, explore opportunities and prepare for adulthood.
Sandwell Careers Service supports this vision by providing independent, impartial careers information, advice and guidance. Our Careers Advisers are highly experienced in working with SEND and understand the importance of personalised, accessible support.
All educational establishments have a statutory responsibility to give their students access to independent, impartial careers information, advice and guidance. This may be offered by Sandwell Careers Service, or other people depending upon which education institution a young person attends. Our careers advisers work with many young people across a wide range of education settings. The range and depth of the support we give depends on the Service Level Agreement in place outlining what we are contracted to do.
The support may include:
• One‑to‑one careers guidance
• Support for parents and carers
• Group sessions
• Exploring career ideas and options
• Advice about Labour Market Information (LMI)
• Attendance at EHCP annual reviews
• Careers Action Plans
• Support with college applications to identify appropriate next steps
• Support after Year 11 to find education, employment or training
We follow the SEND Code of Practice (2015) which is the guidance from the Department of Education given to schools and local authorities
