Centre-UB: Systems Thinking for Male Suicide Prevention

This PhD project aims to address high rates of male suicide in the UK using a “systems thinking” approach. Instead of focusing only on individual issues like mental health or relationship problems, it looks at the wider social, economic, and health systems that influence risk.
The research has three main parts:
- Phase 1 (Rapid Realist Review): Analyse existing data to understand how and why risk factors affect different groups of men.
- Phase 2 (Systems Mapping): Work with policymakers, professionals, and people with lived experience to map how risks, services, and interventions are connected.
- Phase 3 (Case Studies): Test these findings against real UK policies, including detailed work with Sandwell Council to explore how local strategies can better meet community needs.
