The WM Net Zero project is a research initiative in the West Midlands that focuses on making sure climate and net-zero plans also improve people’s health.

Rather than only aiming to meet environmental targets, it looks at how actions like improving transport or changing home heating affect everyday health, such as air quality, physical activity, and local economies.

The team works with the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), councils, and community groups on three key areas:

  • Decarbonising transport: Finding healthier ways for people to travel.
  • Net Zero Neighbourhoods: Making communities greener and healthier places to live.
  • Energy innovation: Exploring cleaner, modern energy solutions.

Funded by the Wellcome Trust and led by the University of Birmingham, the project aims to guide climate action in a way that supports a fairer, healthier society.
