Green Roots on the Meadow is a free, public event to celebrate one of Sandwell’s green spaces, taking place on Saturday 16 August 2025.
Green Roots on the Meadow, a vibrant community event celebrating nature, creativity, and local collaboration, is set to return for a second summer. The event is part of the West Bromwich Urban Greening project and is being delivered by Multistory in partnership with Sandwell Council, New Square West Bromwich, and the Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trust.
Designed to bring together young people, residents, artists, and local partners, the event invites the community to celebrate and care for one of Sandwell’s revitalised green spaces. Attendees can look forward to complimentary refreshments and the unveiling of a new artwork, created by local young people in collaboration with community artists.
The event also marks the ongoing care of the meadow, which was first planted in September 2023, and highlights the power of sustained community involvement in environmental stewardship.
As the Urban Greening project draws to a close, organisers say Green Roots on the Meadow stands as a testament to the role of creativity and collective action in shaping a greener, more connected urban future for Sandwell.
What’s on Offer?
Creative Workshops and Family Activities
Visitors of all ages can take part in free, drop-in art and nature-themed workshops that will explore themes of sustainability, nature and the importance of caring for our local environment.
Live Music and Performances
Enjoy live music throughout the afternoon by Bostin’ Brass and a wonderful pop-up opera performance by Birmingham Opera Company.
New Outdoor Art Commission by Juneau Projects
A highlight of this year’s event will be the launch of a new commission by Juneau Projects, developed in collaboration with young people from YMCA West Bromwich. This outdoor exhibition of wildlife-inspired ceramics will be installed as a trail across the Meadow, inviting people to explore and to celebrate local creativity and biodiversity.
Meadow Cutting Demonstration
The Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trust will lead a wildflower meadow cutting demonstration – an essential part of meadow maintenance that encourages biodiversity. People of all ages can learn about the importance of traditional cutting techniques and how they support the ongoing health of the meadow.
Alice O’Rourke, Programme Manager at Multistory, said: “This year’s event is all about creativity and connection – between people and place, art and nature. We’re thrilled to be unveiling a new community-led artwork by Juneau Projects and welcoming everyone back to the Meadow to celebrate what we can grow and create together.”
Councillor Peter Hughes, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Infrastructure, said: “It’s wonderful to have this green meadow right in the heart of West Bromwich town centre and this event is a great way to involve everyone and celebrate the benefits of this Towns Fund project for the local community. It promises to be a lively occasion with some fantastic entertainment and activities for all ages.”
Don’t miss it!
The event is taking place on Saturday 16 August 2025, from 12pm to 2pm, at the Meadow behind Primark, New Square in West Bromwich.
