The Improving Digital Connectivity Project led by Openreach will ensure homes and businesses across Sandwell experience a digital revolution. This once-in-a-generation upgrade is transforming daily life – helping residents and local companies thrive online and equipping the community with the tools needed for the digital future.

As of August 2025, more than 105,000 homes and businesses now have access to Openreach Full Fibre. Plans are in place to bring full fibre to thousands more properties over the next two years. Openreach’s investment in Sandwell’s digital connectivity is currently at more than £30 million.

Sandwell is one of many areas in the West Midlands benefiting from Openreach’s investment in full fibre. Already, more than 1.7 million homes and businesses across the region now have access, with more to come as work continues. The work is all part of Openreach’s £15 billion project to upgrade the UK’s broadband infrastructure – making gigabit-capable technology available to 25 million homes and businesses by the end of 2026.

Openreach employ 3,000 people in the West Midlands. This team has upgraded 1,200 Sandwell Council Multiple Dwelling Unit (MDU) properties to Full Fibre and working to provide to another 3,200 properties.

Check your upgrade today by visiting the Openreach postcode checker to find out if full fibre is available in your area, and contact your broadband provider to switch.

This development forms new road: Tommy Smart Close, named after the Blackheath-born fullback footballer Thomas Smart who played schools football in Rowley Regis and went on to make five appearances for England at international level.
