Keen gardeners in Wednesbury have been recognised for their green-fingered creativity when the results of Wednesbury in Bloom were announced at the Wednesbury Summer Fete on Saturday, 13 August.

Judging took place during the week commencing 25 July. £50 vouchers were presented by the Mayor of Sandwell, Councillor Richard Jones, at Wednesbury Town Hall to the winners of the following categories:

  • Best garden – Lesley Butterworth
  • Best planters – Vaughan Graham
  • Best hanging baskets – Kenneth Stocking
  • Best business – Oakley Gardens.

The competition and fete were supported by Sandwell Council and Riverside Housing.

£135.00 was raised for the Mayor’s charities, which are St John Ambulance, LGBT+ in Sandwell Community Group, and New Beginnings Baby Bundles.

Denise Ann Heginbotham, Community Engagement Officer of Riverside Housing at Sandwell PFI said: “I want to congratulate everyone who took part in Wednesbury in Bloom: we are all proud of the fine displays of gardens, planters and hanging baskets, plus our businesses that were entered into the competition.

The Mayor of Sandwell, Councillor Richard Jones, said: “I want to thank the excellent gardeners who took part in Wednesbury in Bloom. The judges were very impressed with the very high standards in all four categories.

“You have created something special for Wednesbury, lifting spirits, improving the environment and bringing the community together.”

Councillor Luke Giles, Wednesbury Town Chair, said: “Wednesbury’s gardeners have demonstrated their commitment and expertise, and helped to boost civic pride around Wednesbury.”
