Sandwell Council marks Carers Week

Published 9th June 2022

Sandwell Council is marking Carers Week 2022 by thanking all unpaid carers for the vital work they do.

Carers Week (6-12 June 2022) is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

There are around 6.5 million carers in the UK providing vital support to families, friends and the wider community.

Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for Adults, Social Care and Health, Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, said:

“Carers can be young or old, be parents, wives, husbands, children or friends. They work, often quietly and without praise or financial return, giving vital support and care to those in our society that need it most. Many people caring for a loved one may not think of themselves as carers as they are simply looking after those they love. Nevertheless, their tireless work should be recognised and celebrated, so on behalf of all the people of Sandwell I would like to thank them for everything they do.”

Director of Adult Social Care at Sandwell Council, Rashpal Bishop, added:

“We are here to support carers and would urge anyone who is a carer or knows someone who is a carer to get in touch to ensure they are accessing all the support available for them.”

Sandwell Council has also devised a four-year carers strategy that provides support and guidance to carers and outlines the council’s commitment to supporting them. Find out more about the strategy.
