Sandwell Falls Prevention Service

Published 8th October 2021

A free falls prevention service will offer strength and balance physical activity sessions and risk assessments.

Solutions4Health is providing a free, local ‘Improving Strength & Balance for Falls Prevention’ service to people in Sandwell. This will provide both an online and community-based service, offering strength and balance physical activity sessions as well as risk assessments for those eligible.

According to a GOV.UK publication (Jan 2020), falls are the number one reason that older people are taken into the emergency department in a hospital. Community exercise classes and postural stability instruction provide a targeted approach to adults who have experienced one or more falls and are at risk of further falls. These ensure a community approach to preventative falls management to those most in need. In Sandwell, the aim is to focus on primary prevention (such as preventing a first injurious fall) by improving strength and balance, working in partnership to provide falls awareness information and connecting residents to reduce social isolation/loneliness.

An innovation of this programme is that support is available for any resident aged 50+ with the aim of improving their strength and balance. This can include those residents who may be frail, had a fall, at risk of a fall, have a fear of falling or have low mobility. Sessions can be provided virtually or via face-to-face community sessions with qualified physical activity instructors. Those wishing to access the service can contact their GP for a referral or contact the team directly on fallsfree.sandwell@nhs.net

This is a real opportunity to improve the long-term health of the people of Sandwell. The best outcomes for older people with social care needs and multiple long-term conditions are improved quality of life, and increased independence, choice, dignity, and control.

Leena Sankla, Director of Public Health at Solutions 4 Health, said: “We are pleased to be the new provider of this innovative Improving Strength & Balance for Falls Prevention service for Sandwell. We are keen to give people the best possible chance of a lifelong healthy lifestyle change by maintaining a fit, active and independent way of life.  We look forward to contributing to Sandwell’s wider aims of delivering person-centered care throughout all its services and leading to the community living healthier, happier lives.”

Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for adults, social care and health, said: “This falls prevention service provides invaluable support to those in our community who may have had a fall, are at risk of a fall, have a fear of falling or have other mobility concerns. The preventative falls management delivered by Solutions4Health through the ‘Improving Strength & Balance for Falls Prevention’ service will give back confidence to many people, and encourage a healthier lifestyle.”
