Nursery places for 3 and 4 year olds
All three and four year old children are entitled to receive 15 hours of free, flexible early education/childcare per week, 38 weeks per year.
Free early education/childcare places can be taken flexibly between 7am and 7pm however the following applies:
Maximum of 10 hours in one day
Minimum of 2.5 hours in one day
Where sessional care is offered these can be:
5 hours per day over 3 days
3 hours per day over 5 days
How to get nursery places
Apply directly to the nursery or childcare provider of your choice which must be registered with Ofsted and included on the local authority list of early education providers to offer the free sessions. This includes school nurseries, day nurseries, childminders and playgroups.

When does my child become eligible?
- If your child is born between 1 April and 31 August, they will be eligible for a free place from the start of the autumn term following their third birthday, until statutory school age.
- If your child is born between 1 September and 31 December, they will be eligible for a free place from the start of the spring term following their third birthday, until statutory school age.
- If your child is born between 1 January and 31 March, they will be eligible for a free place from the start of the summer term following their third birthday, until statutory school age.
Please note: There is a cut of date each term for when your child needs to have started at your chosen Nursery Education Provider.
