Council Tax Energy Rebate - what you need to do next

The £150 Energy Bills Rebate is coming
Find out what you need to do next

The Council Tax Energy Rebate is a £150 payment to help with the cost of energy bills. The funding is provided by the Government and paid out by the Council. Here you will find information on what you need to do next to receive the £150 payment.

Sandwell Council has made this payment available to all eligible properties in Bands A to H regardless of Council Tax band. Please read the section below that applies to the Band your property is in.

For households who live in properties in Bands A, B, C and D

The application process for properties in Council Tax Bands A to D is now closed.

Most people in Bands A to D who pay their Council Tax bill by Direct Debit should have received their £150 Energy Rebate directly into their bank account.

If you applied to have the £150 credited to your Council Tax account, or if you did not apply by the deadline, the amount will be credited to your Council Tax account before 30 September 2022 (provided you are eligible).

Once the amount is credited to your Council Tax account, most people will receive a new bill confirming that £150 has been credited. You can then decide whether to leave the £150 on your Council Tax account or you may decide to request a refund.

You may receive an email or letter telling you how to claim a refund. If you don't receive an email or letter, and you want the £150 refunded instead of it being credited to your Council Tax bill, you can apply for a refund from the week beginning 19 September 2022. You can choose to have the refund paid into your bank account or by cheque.

If you don't pay Council Tax because you receive Council Tax reduction or an exemption, or if you have already paid this year's bill in full, and you were eligible for the £150 payment, you will receive an automatic refund by cheque in the post. We will send cheques as quickly as possible.

Please don’t contact us to say you haven’t received your payment or your refund, it will be with you as soon as possible. Our staff are working hard to process these payments and calling us will not speed up your application.

Please note this is not an extra £150 payment – most people (more than 101,000 households) received this payment directly to their bank accounts earlier in the year.

If anything changes regarding this process we will update this page to keep you informed.

For households who live in properties in Bands E, F, G and H

Sandwell Council will also pay people who live in properties in Council Tax Bands E, F, G and H a £150 payment. This is using money known as the “discretionary fund” – funding from the Government to help households not in Bands A to D.

There are 3,356 properties in these Bands in Sandwell. The majority of these pay by Direct Debit and have been paid the £150 automatically.

Anyone in these bands who doesn’t pay by Direct Debit, or for households in Bands E to H who did not receive an automatic payment by 18 July 2022, you will need to apply for your payment online.

We will also write to you if you are in Bands E to H and you need to apply for your payment. If you need to apply for the payment and you’re in Bands E to H, you must apply by the end of September 2022. If you don’t apply by then, we’ll credit the £150 to your Council Tax account at a later date.
