Sixth Form
Sixth Form is where many students go after Year 11 to continue studying.
It usually lasts two years:
-
Year 12
-
Year 13
You normally study A Levels (or similar qualifications) and prepare for university, apprenticeships, or future careers.
Most students study:
-
3 A Levels (sometimes 4 at the start)
A Levels are:
-
Academic subjects (e.g. Maths, English, Biology, History)
-
More detailed than GCSEs
-
Assessed mainly by exams at the end of Year 13
Some sixth forms also offer:
-
BTECs or applied courses
-
EPQ (Extended Project Qualification)
Sixth Form is a good option if you:
-
Enjoy academic learning
-
Want to keep multiple career options open
-
Are thinking about university
-
Prefer a familiar school setting
It gives you strong academic qualifications that are well recognised.
Sixth Form vs College
| Sixth Form | College |
|---|---|
| Mainly A Levels | A Levels + vocational courses |
| Smaller setting | Larger, more independent |
| More structure | More freedom |
| Often your current school | New environment |
Both are good options — it depends on how you learn best.
