Vote for Sandwell in TV lottery contest

Published on 8th June 2011

Sandwell people are being urged to vote in a £60,000 televised lottery contest to help children with learning difficulties and disabilities.

Vote for Sandwell Active DisabilitySandwell Active Disability is battling for cash from the Jubilee People's Millions.

This is presented by Big Lottery Fund in partnership with ITV to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The scheme is on a shortlist of six in the Central TV region.  Sandwell initially goes head to head on TV against a playscheme bid from Coventry - and there will ultimately be four winners.

If Sandwell is successful, the money will provide much-needed sports and other clubs during school holidays in 2011/12 for children with profound learning difficulties and disabilities.

Voting takes place between 9am and midnight on Wednesday, June 29.  A hotline number will appear in the Daily Mirror on that date.

It will also be given out on Central News between 6pm and 6.30pm, alongside a film about the project.

Sandwell Council's cabinet member for children and families Cllr Bob Badham urged everyone to get behind the bid.

He said: "Please do take a few seconds to vote for this fantastic project and tell all your family, friends and colleagues.

"The money will do a huge amount of good, helping children with learning difficulties and disabilities and their families and carers.

"I congratulate the officers who have done such a fantastic job on putting this bid together for such a good cause."

Sandwell Council, Parent Support & Family Learning Team co-ordinated the bid by forming a partnership with The Meadows Sports College and The Albion Foundation.

If successful the funding will benefit all of the Sandwell Special Schools and children with disabilities from Sandwell mainstream schools.

People can vote up to 10 times for each project.

Calls cost 11p from BT landlines. Calls from other networks may be higher and from mobiles will be considerably more.

Russell Abbott, outreach & enrichment leader at The Meadows Sports College, said: "There would be fun activities for the students to enjoy with school friends and, best of all, it would be for free.

"This project would be so important for children with learning difficulties and disabilities."
