Surplus council buildings could be earmarked for housing

New council homes are set to be created if plans to convert council buildings which are no longer in use are given the go-ahead.
Sandwell's Cabinet is being asked to approve the transfer of two buildings to the council's housing stock so they can provide new homes to rent.
The first is a property in Dagger Lane, West Bromwich, which used to provide on-site accommodation for a council employee and is no longer used.
The second, a town house at Woodland Drive in Smethwick was previously used as a children's play centre by Sandwell Adventure Play Association.
If the plans are approved, both properties would be refurbished and become council homes for rent.
Plans to build a second house on land at the Woodland Drive site will also be looked at.
Councillor Bob Lloyd, cabinet member for Inclusive Economic Growth, said: "If approved, this scheme will see these council assets being brought back into use, creating much-needed new council homes and flats for rent.
"Once renovated and refurbished they will provide good quality, attractive homes for people."
The report will be discussed at the next Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 28 August.
