Proposal to double capacity at primary school in Smethwick

Published 12th September 2018

Plans to double the capacity of a primary school in Smethwick are set to be discussed by Sandwell Council's cabinet next week (Wednesday 19 September).

St Matthew's C of E Primary School on Windmill Lane in Smethwick currently has around 210 pupils but with these proposals, the school will increase its capacity to 420 pupils.

Plans are for a brand new school building to be built on the opposite side of the road to the current school site on cleared land formerly occupied by maisonettes.

Councillor Simon Hackett, cabinet member for children's services said: "School places are in high demand in Smethwick so this extension to St Matthew's, which is a popular school, will ensure more parents get a place in the school of their choice.

"This extension is part of a wider plan to make sure there are enough school places across the whole of Sandwell including the addition of two brand new schools in the coming years."

If approved and subject to planning permission, it is hoped work will start on-site later this year with completion planned for the end of 2019.
