Building projects and building professionals working in Sandwell have been recognised at a prestigious awards scheme after being nominated by Sandwell Council's Building Control team.

The team - which inspects all types of building projects, making sure they meet legal building regulations - made the nominations for this year's Building Excellence Awards, resulting in two overall category winners and another three projects being highly commended.
Winner of the Best Change of Use or Conversion category was the conversion of The Red House in Great Barr to eight apartments, carried out by Gr8 Space Limited.

The Grade ll listed building situated in Red House Park has been sensitively restored by Gr8 Space and converted into eight luxury apartments with another six new houses built in a complimentary style, alongside in Hill Lane.

Sandwell's other winner was in the Best Construction Professional of the Year category, which was won by Graham Mills, of Kier Partnership Homes, the site manager of Kier's Park View housing development at Claypit Lane, West Bromwich.

Highly commended were Countryside Properties for their Regis Park housing development at Doulton Road, Rowley Regis, in the Best High Volume Housing category, and Interserve Construction for the new teaching block at the RSA Academy in Tipton in the Best Educational Building category.

The third highly commended award went to civil engineers Forkers Ltd for their new offices at Shaw Street, Hill Top, West Bromwich in the 'Best Commercial Building' category.

Alison Knight, Sandwell’s Executive Director – Neighbourhoods, said: “These awards demonstrate the range and complexity of projects which Sandwell’s Building Control team, planners and other council professionals are involved with.

“These same professionals that are appointed by major developers and large international companies to look after their projects are also out every day carrying out inspections on household extensions and other domestic projects for households across Sandwell."

The winners were announced at the West Midlands Building Excellence Awards held at the ICC in Birmingham last Friday (13 April).
