More school places at Sandwell special school

Published 22nd September 2017

Sandwell Council has started a programme to increase the number of special school places available in the borough.

The Meadows Sports College in Oldbury will now be able to offer places to younger children and increase the school's capacity to cater for up to 20 more pupils.

The school will now cater for children with special educational needs or disabilities from the age of nine to 19. Currently the age range at the special school is 11 to 19. Once implemented the school will offer places to include pupils in years five and six.

Councillor Simon Hackett, cabinet member for children's services said: "I've received feedback from parents and carers about a shortage of places for children with special educational needs.

"Staff are working very hard making plans for what can be done longer term to create more places in special schools. Adding this extra capacity for special school places at The Meadows in Oldbury is a first step in a series of expansions we hope to take place over the coming years."

A few minor modifications will be made to the school and it is expected the extra places will be offered from 1 November 2017.
